As a Painter.
Painting this quarter has not been extremely eventful, for my art credit I have been focusing on ceramics. As a side note saying “for a credit” is not how I feel about my studies what so ever, these studies are a part of who I am like my arm or like...hair. Anyway, I have focused less on the painting part of my study this quarter.
Storytime!
Storytime! Way back when I had my first semester exhibition the idea of simplicity came up pertaining to my art, simplifying the concepts and the manner of how I make art. This idea of simplicity extremely clashes with the current way that I paint, everything is complicated and exact. This simplicity was brought to the table because we were talking about how my current process in painting is not super sustainable, this process takes a lot out of me mentally, constantly solving visual problems, stressing about what could go wrong, and taking preventative measures to ensure the quality of the painting is a lot and not sustainable. Another thing that was brought up in my exhibition was the tendency I have to try and control the media I am trying to work with mentioned by Meg. That is true, the reason I like acrylic so much is because I can control the media, it is the most accurate way of depicting what is in my mind.
This quarter in the beginning I was sort of stuck, with this new idea of simplicity I did not know if I wanted to make another painting with my old process. As the quarter progressed I decided that I would try and make a painting that embodied the idea of simplicity, and helped me let go of wanting to control the media. The new painting was done in small brush strokes and general shapes to create a moonlit landscape. Through the process of painting I did not focus on making details crisp I wanted to get across the calm of driving in vermont on a summer night. I am currently not finished with the painting all that is left is to add the light from the car headlights and the window light. Eyes and EndingsHaving to do with the letting go part of my study I have been reading a book about Monet to get some inspiration about the less detail oriented way of painting. This part of my study was not specified or very directed, I set out with a goal of making a research paper on both Monet and Goya but I just started these mini projects.
As I mentioned I am not the type to end things mediocrely, so for this last quarter I am making an 8ft by 8ft painting of the eyes of the people most important to me and who have helped me grow as an artist through the pilot years. The painting will be on canvas, with mixed colors, and they will be painted with looser brush strokes with general details. |
College PortfolioI applied to college by the way. I spent a week repainting my old paintings to add backgrounds and just to make sure that they were the best they could be. I spent a week photographing the pieces, editing them in photoshop, and finally uploading them to slideroom.
I have been emailing back and forth with Sam TK the manager of the local 64 (a gallery in Montpelier) to see if I could get my pieces up for a show. I succeeded and I will be the featured artist of the month of June! |
